Outside-

  • When extracting soil, we used a soil core extractor that was 15cm x 2cm.
  • Double check that the sample number from the soil is the same
  • After collecting each sample, rinse your tool so there is no cross contamination of soil.
  • When we went outside we lathered on the bug spray and wore long pants, boots and a long shirt to make sure we would not get any bug bites and protected ourselves from ticks.
  • Always bring a med-kit with you so in case there is an accident  and medical supplies are needed.
  • Wear gloves when touching plants, you never know if it is poisonous! (poison ivy has leaves of three. Poison Oak looks like a hairy rope going up a tree.)

  • Record the locations where you took soil samples so it is easy to find the location

When Testing-

·         When a chemical spills, get an adult IMMEDIATELY. You never know how serious a spill could be and it is better to be safe than sorry.

  •  When collecting data, make a data table.

·         When testing for Potassium, we used the La Motte soil combination model STH-14 test kit©.

   ·         Make sure all your mold and yeast plates, plastic baggies and test tubes are labeled correctly.

·         Wear gloves and goggles when testing so chemicals do not touch your skin or eyes.
