Trouble Shooting
Selecting a Location: ~Be sure to bring extra safety equipment,
especially if the location is on a steep hill or is slippery. Suggested Safety Equipment:
Walking
Stick
First Aid Kit
Walkie-talkie or Cell Phone
Water Bottle
Advice for Algae Slides: ~Beware that microscope slides are delicate and made of glass. Be careful not to step on them and be gentle when removing them from the ground. ~If a slide breaks, tell an adult and be careful not to cut yourelf
~Be
sure to closely mark the flags next to the slides; this will help to
keep track of the virtually invisible slides. ~It may be helpful to hold the edges of the
slides, when rinsing them with distilled water. ~Be sure to thoroughly rinse
off the algae slides. |
Advice for Worm Extraction: ~If there are many roots or other underbrush in the location where you are hammering, it may be helpful to use a trough to loosen the soil and to pull other hindrances out of the ground by hand. ~Be sure there is adequate space around the person hammering because bystanders could possibly get hurt.
~Once the sifted soil is dumped back into the
hole, step onto the soil in order to make sure that the soil is compact;
this will prevent a ditch in which someone could get hurt.
Advice for Counting Algae:
~When counting algae, make sure you have
correctly identified the microscopic algae, as you would not want count
the incorrect organism.
