Some tips and tricks to avoid the problems we encountered

  • Always wash off your soil core extractor after taking each sample 
  • if the soil is too hard to simply push soil core extractor into the ground hammer the top into the ground
 
  • Make sure to wear goggles and gloves during chemical testing
  • If soil splashes inbetween your filter paper and funnel the solution will get contaminated so you must redo the contaminated sample
 
  • To avoid spilling water make sure to keep any faucet on low pressure
  • thoroughly rinse any area of skin that has been in contact with chemicals
  • If chemicals are ingested call poisin control at 1-800-222-1222
  • The test kit we used for this experiment was the LaMotte test kit Model STH - 14. You can visit the LaMotte Company website here
 
  • To run 2 sample T-Tests on your calculater you must use a Ti-83 calculater or a more recent version. Click on STAT, hit enter and enter your raw data into each list respectively. Click STAT again and scroll over to calculate, you will want option 4. After scrolling down press enter while calculate is highlighted and your statistic analysis including your P value will be calculated and show up on your screen.
  • While performing Nitrate tests or any chemical test, if steps are performed in the wrong order that test will not produce accurate results. You must perform the test again in the correct order
  • When you go outside make sure to put on bugspray. We recommend long sleeves and pants to prevent mosquito, tick, and other insect bites that can cause disease
 
  • it can also be wise to wear boots and other heavey duty clothing to always be safe and prepared for all conditions
