Troubleshooting and Safety
Wear bug spray, long pants, and closed-toed shoes to avoid poison ivy and bug bites.
Always wear gloves and goggles when you're using chemicals.

How to make detergent solution for soil texture test:
   Materials:
225 mL Cascade Complete Dishwashing Detergent
   1 g Na2HPO4
7H2O
   25 mL H2O

   Stir materials until fully mixed.

Remember to collect soil core samples for EACH algae slide that you put in the ground.

When collecting soil samples in different quadrants make sure the plant life is a controlled variable. This can either be the same species of plants or much diversity in plant life.

If you are having trouble putting an algae slide in the ground, dig your trowel deep into the ground and move the soil to make space for the slide. Do not force the slide into the ground because it can break and you will not have any data to use.

If glass is broken in the field, carefully use the trowel to remove any pieces from the ground and dispose of any unusable pieces properly.

After pH testing, remember to wipe down your workspace with alcohol to make sure that no chemical residue is left behind.

If, when you are pH testing, and your narrow range indicator becomes a color that is not on the chart, redo the test and use a different indicator.

If your soil texture test does not settle in a straight line, pour out the jar and start over.

If the soil sample does not settle during pH testing, use a centrifuge for one minute to separate the liquid from the clay.

If you can not find any algae beneath the microscope, try refocusing. If you still cannot see any, use the diaphragm to turn the light down.

If you do not have enough soil for all of your tests, take two soil core samples from the same spot.

If you spill acid on yourself, wash it off immediatley off with water.

If someone gets acid in their eyes, use the eye wash to immediatley remove it.

If you accidentally ingest any chemicals, call poison control and follow their instructions.
