Trouble-Shooting: Helpful Tips

 In the Backwoods:

  •                          Remember to bring out all materials before any data collection.

  •                   Dress in proper field gear for the daily weather conditions (raincoat, long pants, gloves).

  •                   Bug spray prior to going outside to help prevent the mosquitos and ticks.

  •                   Take medical kit into the backwoods in case of any emergencies.

  •                         Always check for ticks after coming back inside.

  •                         Always wash off the soil extraction tool before collecting any other soil samples - it can contaminate the other samples.

 In the Lab:

  •                   Always wear gloves and goggles when chemical tests are taking place.

  •                   Always draw out the data table before doing the actual chemical test.

  •                         During extractions, make sure to not spill the solution between the filter paper and funnel and if solution is spilled, the sample will be contaminated.

  •                   When finished, wash table thoroughly with alcohol to clean dirt and chemicals.

  •                          Keep the tubes in the tube rack or in the chemical case at all times to avoid breaking glass.

  •              A similar soil test kit can be found here

 Calcium Test:

  •               Always look through the turbidity vial in the light in order to get the most accurate test results.

  •               Remember to mutiply the test result by 1/2 in order to obtain parts per million (ppm).

 Potassium Test:

  •               Use a paper towel under each rack to label which test is being completed.
