General
Overview
Allow 5-6 days to entirely complete an experiment like this.
Make sure you are fully equipped with all of the necessary
materials before starting a similar experiment.
Have all charts for raw data made before proceeding with
collecting data
Label everything according to sample
When doing an experiment like this, make sure that you know how to identify the difference between yeast and mold when they are visible on the nutrient papers and the weather forecast for the duration of the experiment.
Microclimate/Outdoor Work
Try to find hill with a steep slope, but use caution and watch your step!
Make sure you have all water needed for
watering so there is no need for a second trip.
When pouring water onto the soil plots, do it slowly
to prevent runoff and try to make sure that all of the water has been absorbed
into the soil.
Bring bug spray for time in the woods and wear
protective clothing as well, including hats, work gloves, long sleeves, and long
pants.
Wear old tennis shoes or shoes that you don’t mind
getting muddy, dirty, etc.
Bring extra bags as well as sharpies just in case one
breaks while outside.
Bring a hammer to use with the soil cylinder.
Do not leave collected soil out in the open, instead,
leave in closed plastic bags to prevent moisture from escaping, thus leaving
invalid results.
Have oven mitts or hot pads on hand when removing
dirt from the oven.
Collect and test samples on the same day if possible.
If there are not enough nutrient papers for the
growing of the yeast and mold, cut the papers in half lengthwise.
Use a magnifying glass when counting the yeast and mold on the
nutrient papers.
Wear gloves and goggles when handling the yeast and mold
nutrient papers, the yeast and mold need to be contained.
Do not touch your face at any time when handling the yeast and
mold nutrient papers.
Wash your hands after handling the nutrient papers even if you
were wearing gloves.
Place the nutrient plates in a biohazard container after use.
